Odds and payouts are different things. If either the odds or payouts don't change, then the result is the same - eventual loss.

What should I have done in this situation?

So, long story short. I started playing roulette about 2 weeks ago. At first I didn't really know how to play til I figured out "Oh I can just pick red, black, odd, even, 1-19, or 20-36 til it hits and when It doesn't hit just keep doubling til it does. So, I started out doing pretty good. I would go to the casino and win 2-300 dollars at a time and then just leave. Well, one day I went to play and got up pretty good til I hit a dreaded color streak in which I kept doubling to the point where I basically ran out of money. I end up losing 1k dollars in the process. So being devastated, but not hopeless, I went home and started tweaking my system. So I started focusing on just playing odd and evens and also decided to increase my bank roll to 1k dollars. So I get to the casino on a quest to gain back the money I previously lost. Things started out well and I began to get up to $800 dollars, just $200 dollars away from breaking even, I place a bet on odd for $20, then $40, then $80, then $160, then $320, then $640 and still no odd number so I basically lost $1280.00. So what do you do in this situation?

Stop.
Look for a system that doesn't involve doubling up your recovery bet (Martingale it's known as)
I take it you do realise,  when you play that way, you are only ever chasing your original stake bet?

The other thing I would say, is don't bet every spin.
Wait till the wheel is in your favour.
Or you could have bet with the trend instead.

Read the forum for systems.
Winkel's Universal G U T is good place to start.
And practice before you go to the casino.

Best of luck

We've all been there my friend . Right now stop playing roulette you will not recover the lose , will lose even more.
If you like this game take that lose as a lesson  for the moment , and start to study this game for at least a few months.
Only after.... you study some systems , make lots of simulations ,  take advice from others experiences  .....you should go again to the  casino.
There are not only system players .... are AP  players, dealer signature etc....lot of study and work before play for real.

cheers

Please stop playing for Real money at the moment.  Good advice from Katilla.

Look at flat-bets only tactics and follow the wheel
(If you see three or more Red stay with Red, three or more Odd stay with Odd....

"1-19 or 20-36 til it hits" >>> 1-18 & 19-36 but I/we knew what you meant.

Watch us big doggs, the MEN, play at a REAL casino, on a REAL table. All we ask is that you stay out of our way. The rest? Bots, airball, RNG...that's more for the Kitty Kat Klub. Its the big doggs and the kittens!! Winning is not an event, it's a process and it takes YEARS and YEARS to master > link:://:.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/2014127/rs_560x415-140227131132-1024.bulldog-kittens3.jpg... To be great, you have to be willing to be mocked, hated and misunderstood.

This was your first mistake. Never ever go to the casino to gain back money you have lost previously.
With right tools and good money management, any gambling activity can produce a steady income.

If you bet with the streak you can only lose
once. I read that on GG where I wrote it in
2008.
