Title: Trading on the betting exchanges.
Post by: flukey luke on Nov 02, 07:10 AM 2010
Roulette is not my only passion, I also like to play on the betting exchanges.
Here in the UK we have a company called betfair which is great for trading.
The beautiful thing about this is that you can choose to be either a 'backer' or 'layer'.
So if you fancy something to win, you back it. If you fancy something to lose, you lay it.
There is plenty of liquidity in the market and I personally never have a problem matching any of my bets with other customers on the site. The company really just acts as a middleman. They take a small comission of winning bets.
I will start giving out a bet on most days day, it could be a 'back' or a 'lay'.
The backing aspect should be simple enough for anyone to understand.
example: back horse a at odds of 2/1. You will be returned 2/1 + your stake back.
Laying is a bit more difficult. Suppose you did not fancy horse a to win at 2/1. Here you are offering someone else to back it with you, if it loses, you keep their stake. If it wins, you pay them out. Obviously it is up to you what you are prepared to win or lose.
If you decide to lay the horse for 60.00 of your own money, that means you stand to win 30.00 should the horse lose. If it wins, you lose your 60.00.
On betfair, you can back or lay more or less any sporting event that is happening around the world. I will be mostly concentrating on horseracing on this thread.
If you don't have access to betfair, then when I recommend a bet to 'back' you should still be able to use a traditional bookmaker to get a bet on if you wish.

Bet number 1.
2.35 exeter. sommersby. (back to win) The current price is 3.5 or 5/2 in my language. This means if you place a 10.00 bet and the horse wins, you get back 25.00 winnings + your 10.00 stake back.
I will keep a running total of all the bets and I expect to make a profit at the end of every month.
I would recommend putting the same stake on each selection regardless of the odds when backing the selections.

@Victor, I imagine I will get good feedback for the winners and 'not so good' feedback for the losers.  ;D Only joking. It is a long term project and the aim is to show a monthly profit.

Hi flukey luke

Good luck with this thread, I used to do a lot of trading on Betfair a few years ago, but work got in the way, but this is something I will be picking up again in the new year.

Thanks

Well done Twister, I thought the second string was going to get up and beat the other one for a moment.

Well, I started with a loss. So -1 point after today. Tomorrow is another day.

My average so far this year is at +22 per month, so don't panic just yet.  :)

Today's selection is the following.

Bet number 2.
4.05 nottingham. hail tiberius. (back to win) the current price is 13.0 or 12/1.
With this one, I suggest to do it each way. So basically you are just splitting your 1 point stake in half.

good luck.
Title: Re: Trading on the betting exchanges.
Post by: flukey luke on Nov 03, 08:02 AM 2010
The horse today (hail tiberius) will appreciate the extra furlong and the heavier going.
I fully expect it to run into a place at the very least.

Title: Re: Trading on the betting exchanges.
Post by: flukey luke on Nov 03, 08:22 PM 2010
Twister, I compile my own ratings first and foremost. On saying that, I do have contacts in the sport and I also know a few guys that work in the trading rooms at one of the major bookmakers. This has it's advantages. If one of my contacts tells me something is fancied, I can check around to see if the 'right' people are putting money down.
On saying all that, it is all about opinions.  The secret as always is to be right a bit more than your wrong and make a profit. There are no instant riches to be had.
The horse I tipped up today got well backed in the afternoon into 8/1 on course before drifting back out to 9's.  Unfortunately it lost and that leaves me at -2 points for the month now.

As an aside and this will not be my tip tomorrow (I will never tip up an odds on shot), I have had some information for a horse running in the 3.50 at haydock tomorrow called 'lively baron' They are 8 runners in the race, but I think the best I can hope for is a shade of odds on. I will be having a lumpy bet on myself because the guy who told me is a pretty shrewd judge and very rarely comes away empty handed when the money is down.

Sometimes I can get an early price for a horse the night before and back it with Paddy Power or Bet365. If the horse gets smashed of the boards, then I can lay it back and guarantee a profit either way, win or lose.

For those interested in a program to:

*  get bets on instantly so as to lock in the price

*  run dutch books (backing or laying)

*  trade with greening

then Bet-IE ( "Betty" to her multitude of worshippers, including little moi) is worth your consideration.

It's been around quite a while.

Does what it says on the tin.

The one-off purchase includes all future updates.

And support is resonsive, timely and helpful.

I bought it about 4 years ago and would never use BF without it.

[Disclaimers: I am not the owner. I do not sell it. The owner is not a relative. I am not married to the owner.]

Bet number 3.

2.40 haydock. laredo sound (back to win) It is 8.0 - 7/1 at the moment. I expect this one to shorten up a bit before the start.

The horse I got a mention for 'lively baron' is 4/9. Not really my sort of price. Will hold off and hope for maybe around 8/11 at the opening show (fingers crossed)

The money is coming for laredo sound as we speak, a lot of badly handicapped horses in the race and think this may be the day for my one.
I doubt very much I will get 8/11 for 'lively baron'  :D
I may have a nifty on at 4/6 if I can get it.

Post by: flukey luke on Nov 04, 08:29 AM 2010
It's all happening today  :)
I am going to post up my first 'lay of the day' today as well.
Remember, laying is backing a horse to lose. You can only do this with a betfair trading account. Basically, if you have an opinion that a horse will lose, someone who thinks it will win will back against you. In my opinion it is slightly easier to find losers than winners. I say this because I lay horses that are strong in the market (ie. favourites) any mug can say a 20/1 shot will lose.  :D You will get away with it and then one day the 20/1 beast wins and all your profits are gone.  :'(
Lay of the day.
3.40 lingfield. papageno. (lay to lose) It is a 2.0 or 1/1 shot at the moment. I can't have it and will be laying it accordingly.

A bit of a mixed day.
The win bet laredo sound losing.
The tip on lively baron winning.
The lay bet winning (which means it lost as I expected)
I never backed the tip, the price ended up at 2/7. 4/9 was the best price I could have had.
Laredo sound was travelling well and just seemed to blow up.
I was happy with the lay, it never really looked like winning.
I will keep seperate figures for the 3 different types of bets.
My personal win bets.
Tips (information).
My personal Lays.

Thank you Blood Angel, It's good to know a few people are following with interest.
I was thinking of putting up a kind of blog/diary on a thread where I share my daily experiences. I could share some of the methods I use and explain a bit more on how to look for value selections.

Bet number 4.
4.10 hexham. Gavroche Gaugain. (back to win) it is 6.0 - 5/1 at the moment with most major firms. I think this one could go clear favourite before the race and the price will probably shorten.
Anyway, good luck if anybody plays.

Don't go now Twister, you are in good form.  :)
This year has being pretty good for me so far, my POT on just my own selections is a little over 50%. I can't honestly expect to keep that up forever.
My lays are going well and the info is rock solid most of the time. I have made more doing this than playing roulette over the last 10 months. In fact roulette has kind of taken a back seat. I like the challenge of the exchanges because I am still pretty new to it all and learning as I go along.

OK, if ure sure ?

50% ?
Thats very impressive !!
Most Pro's will aim for around 10%, obviously more if they can acheive it.

I used to be a member of a Pro service and spent 2 weeks with the guy. Taught me alot.

I always price up my own book and then look for value.

That horse today I had as a 3/1 chance. As in if I were a Bookmaker I wud not of offered more than 3's
I looked and as soon as I saw it was 10's Bam its a selection !

Obviously the last few days are not the norm

On another day ure horse wud not of fallen and I would of been 2nd, but then jumping is the name of the game and all that blah blah blah  :D

I was impressed with ure lay the other day for sure. It was one of those races that made you think, ok it may lose but what is going to beat it !

There was one race you played in and I didnt have a bet. Had 10 runners but 8 of them cud of won it, hence I avoided it.

Ok, we carry on as before  :)

If i have a selection in a different race i will post that too

(just btwn you and me-I used to have my own tipping service, advertising in the Post) went tits with the divorce but prior to that I was 2nd only to Isiris.

Ok mate, catch you 2moz

One time I phoned up Coral and wanted 500 e/w on at 5/1......Win only at SP they said.....was high so went for 1k win at SP........romped in 7L clear and SP'd at 8/1  :D

I think Kevin still does his losers line for Isiris, im not sure though.

To be fair Twister, I have had some big priced winners thrown in that lot. But if you don't back a 16-1 shot, then you 'aint getting a 16-1 winner.  ;D
I am in it for a long term profit. I can't be doing with 6-4 shots when the jockeys are trying to be too clever half the time.  I will look forward to your selections. I am pretty certain that between us, we can come up with some good stuff.

Yes I heard a lot of tales about Mr Booth.
He once claimed he was kidnapped and someone else was running his tipping line, LoL.
Needless to say, that was a bad spell. He just started back up not so long ago.
The problem with his stuff was that you could never get on before the price crash.
I have that problem solved now. I get some info the night before sometimes and can back it for small amounts at PP AND 365. An easy lay the next morning once all the punters get out of bed. If I get anything I will put it up. It is great backing a 20/1 the night before and waking up finding it is about 7's and laying it.

Spot on mate.

Value Value Value

If you are always backing 3/1 shots at 10/1 ure win in the long term

Did you ever see the Aussie dogs Corals did ?

They totally PHUCKED UP !

Aussie dogs are priced like the Tote

Corals were giving out board prices

Every day 6 days a week for 6 months until they banned me i was backing Aussie dogs

The RP gave the Tissue price

Often it would say 6/4 etc

The board price was 5s BEFORE coming in to 6/4.....Totally cleaned up

Best one EVER was Tissue of 1/10 and I got 16s before it went off at 1/5 (yes it was that volatile!)

Ah I was in Heaven  ;D

In the summer of '98 you couldnt get on an Isiris horse for love nor money

They were throwing out winners like you wudnt believe

One time i did it as fast as possible

Got the bet, phoned corals......almost got the bet on until the "pit boss" starts shouting the name of the Isiris horse.....then got sorry sir no bet  :D

Havin said all of that Im not a fan of "inside info"

Its all a matter of opinion.....most Trainers say good things things as do the Jocks

Anyway Ive rambled enough

You are only as good as ure last winner in this trade

Your only remembered for ure losers, think of Peter Sandrovich  :xd:

There used to be a phone box just outside laddies and with Isiris, you were always told to phone about 5-10 minutes before the race. So I would rush out, phone up and dive back in to the counter with my slip. The prices used to get gobbled up in a minute, lol.
One of the best blokes I ever knew was a guy by the name of Russell Clarke, lives in Spain now and concentrates mostly on football betting, he was one of the few genuine guys in the sport. I agree with all you say about trainers. They may think their horse is the best thing since sliced bread but they don't always know what everybody else is up to.

Ah yes  :)
The times I did that lol

Again got banned from my local coral shop

Didnt have a bet in there for like 2-3 months

Then one time sent the Mrs in. She wrote it out, went to put it on and they said "Paul is banned from here" LOL and they didnt even know who she was

Ok last bask in glory before dinna

My fav bet EVER was I spent a whole day driving round Surrey back a horse at 10/1. The fav was 1/10
My horse got up on the line (all weather at southwell) and won

Fact 98% of odds on horses lose 1st time out on All weather, that little piece of info will keep you warm for a while !

Had some information from one of my contacts for the following.

12.50 doncaster. fettucine (back to win) it is 3-0 - 2/1 at the moment.
This price definately won't last. This is the same guy that gave me 'lively baron' the other day and at least the price is right here. At 2/1, it is a great bet. My friend at one of the trading centres confirms the shrewdies are on.

good luck.

One other bit of info from my mate at the trading room.
A lot of money has being going down on Kilmarnock to beat St Johnstone in the SPL Premier Football League in Scotland. It is pretty much one sided at the moment. Normally this kind of info pays off as well. I think Kilmarnock are a best priced 5/2 with william hill.

edit. I said earlier I thought they were 5/6, my mistake. At 5/2, I am lumping on.

Bet number 5.

3.20 wincanton. barizian (back to win) 10.0 - 9/1 best price around at the moment.

good luck to anyone playing today.

phew, I can get back to roulette now.  :D

Back again.  :D
Just a quick word about the kilmarnock bet.
Paddy Power bookmakers offer a (draw-no bet) This price is 5/4.
This basically means if it is a draw, you get your money book. The only thing that can beat you here is if St Johnstone win, I really don't think that is going to happen today.
If you are risk averse, then 5/4 for the draw-no bet is cracking value.

Unlucky on eton raffles for the win Twister.
My 2 horses let me down but Kilmarnock thumped St Johnstone 3-0.
I did the draw-no bet to be safe, but when the 2 horses lost, I got a bit brave and decided to do a Kilmarnock win bet as well.  :D
Spent an afternoon in the casino and did ok there, so all in all, not a bad day.
Hopefully the horse results will turn around next week.

The angle I have on the football is a good one. It does not happen so often in the UK games, but in europe, you would be surprised.  ;)
When money comes for just one team in a mad rush, that team has the uncanny ability of winning the game.  :D

Good morning guys (just made it)  :D

Two bets for today.

Bet number 6.
1.50 market rasen. maceda (back to win) 3.75 - 11/4 best price at the moment.
Fingers crossed for this one, I really like it.

Football.
I can't see how chelsea are  2.00 - 11/10 to beat liverpool today in the English Barclays Premier League. I know liverpool have strung a few results together over the last few weeks, but in my opinion Chelsea should win comfortably today. I will be backing Chelsea with confidence.

good luck to anybody that plays.

Ok a good day  :)

1st selection lost, so the e/w double went down too but the selection Get It On was a very easy winner even when almost falling at the last it won easy. Early price of 9/2 was massive and the selection went off around 5/2 so a nice touch

My selection Maceada was second to Twister's in the same race. The f/c paid a nice 14.88.
I am going to dutch them in future if we both have selections in the same race.  :)
For anyone who does not know what dutching is, it just means backing two horses in the same race, if either win, you make a profit.

Had a phone call of my mate in the trading room, he tells me that a LOT of money is going on to an NFL game tonight. (Chicago vs Buffalo) The advice is to back Chicago giving up a 3 point  start. (this means they are efeectively minus 3 going into the game) With Ladbrokes, they are 10/11. If you shop around, you may get 1/1. Anyway money talks, and a lot of it is pouring onto Chicago.
It is not just the amount of money, but more importantly where it comes from.

On another day when mine nosed at the last you wud of gone on to win, was lucky to stay upright !

Im not a fan of backing two horses in one race, unless its a RFC which I may do in future if we go head to head again  :)

Good morning guys.

Well I am away to Wolverhampton racecourse today. It is only about 45 minutes away from me and the fresh air will do me good.  ;D

To round of last week, I had a bet on Chicago last night giving Buffalo a 3 point start.
Chicago won 22-19 making it a draw and no payout.  :'(

Anyway, no use crying over spilt milk and I hope this week will be a lot better.

Bet number 1.

2.35 Wolverhampton. Sir Lunchalot (back to win) 8.0 or 7/1 is the best price on offer.

Lay of the day.

3.10 Wolverhampton. Gentleman is Back (back to lose) it is 8/13 at the moment.
The reason I am laying it is partly because of the jockey.  ;) But I also think there are 2 others in the race with a good shout. It is not going to cost me too much to find out.

Twister, I agree with you on Overquest, I think it is very well handicapped and should have won last time out, hopefully today will be a win for it.

Good luck to anyone playing.

Forgot to mention, I had a word from a friend about a horse in the 1.10 at lingfield.
It is the Bishops baby. He suggested taking the 12/1 on offer now and then laying it off just before the race. He thinks the money will come for it, if it does, then it's a bet to nothing. And if it wins, then a small bonus.
Title: Re: Trading on the betting exchanges.
Post by: flukey luke on Nov 09, 08:23 AM 2010
Oh well, managed to lay The bishops baby at 9's, so a free bet, if it had won (which it did not)
I would have made a 3 point profit. It's a good way to trade.

One of my selections Russeltown in the 2.40 at lingfield is a non-runner, so scratch that one.

Hello Superman,
I would not consider myself to be a pro at this sport by a long way.  :)
I have only really taken an interest in it over the last 12-18 months. It is a fact that only 2% of the people participating in it can make the game pay.
There are just so many variables involved.
ie. jockey, trainer, course, distance, going. That is probably only half of it as well.
As for staking plans, I think level stakes are best. In fact the Kelly Criterion would probably be just as effective here as it is in other fields. (especially for me at the moment anyhow  :D )
There are all kinds of different software programs available. A lot of people compile their own ratings and form a tissue (this means making their own book) Then if they spot 'value' and other factors look positive, it would probably signal a bet.
Rather than backing horses to win, I am now more inclined to think backing horses to lose (in other words 'laying' them is probably the best route to go down). It may be that staking plans would be more effective here as well.
Let me just give you a brief example. The other day, I did not fancy a horse to win, it's price was 8/13. I forget how many other horses were in the race just now, but I think at least another 7 or 8. So in effect I had these horses running for me. Any one of them could win and I would collect my lay bet. I think that someone who is very selective could find a few excellent lays a week where the public overbet the lay selection and therefore it's price is shorter than it's true chance of winning. So in a sense, you are getting value laying it. If you can find enough of these over time to lay at prices lower than 1/1, then it may be possible that a good staking plan could work. It is not really like roulette where the odds are fixed. If 10 reds have come up in a row, I would not be getting any value in laying black. But if the public have overbet horse A, and it's true chance of winning is 2/1 and yet it is a 1/1 shot, then I have value on my side. So here, it would be fascinating to see if progressions  could work. I would be inclined to think some kind of positive progression may be worth looking into here as well. Anyway, all just thoughts really.
I love the challenge and I don't give up, so it is going to be a long hard road ahead. But it would be nice in a few years to have another string to my bow.

3.25 newcastle. rare society (back to win each way) 33/1 current best price.
It has not done much this year but was second twice of higher marks last year. So half a point each way is the bet.

you were unlucky there Twister, the horse was definately travelling better than anything in the race, in fact, it looked like he was taking a bit of a tug and just waiting to unleash a few out.  :'(

Hello  :)
I have run out of betting bank before running out of the month.  :D
So I will have to call it quits. I set aside money each month for my gambling hobbies and I don't want to dip into any more. In fact, I am that depressed from this months results, that I am taking all my winnings from the year and going and doing my christmas shopping today. (better than losing it all chasing)
A wise man told me that it was the wrong time of the year for betting on horses because we are in the middle of the two codes (end of the flat / start of the jump) Being a newbie, I should have listened. Anyway, I hope nobody lost too much if they followed any of my selections.
I am going back to roulette for the rest of the year. I actually had a pretty good idea for a method that I will post about later. It is probably the first roulette idea I have had for this year which actually excites me. That could be a good sign or maybe not!  ;D
Thank you Twister for participating in the thread. Keep it going mate if you like. You have provided some good winners at really good prices. I hope a few were on them.
Ok, I am away for a bit of retail therapy.  :P
