If you've ever asked where is the electric car, this will open your eyes. They get away with this because we let them, i.e. there is not enough pressure to stop it. On line, you can still buy the older-model, used electric cars. But those have very-limited speeds and distances... except for the handful which became "project cars" for the mechanics who were capable of extending those, at a greater expense of course.
The prices are quite-modest, so even the skeptics can see for themselves. Besides, such cars have been seriously "on the drawing boards" of just about every public technical institution (of higher learning) for the last 50 years. So, i doubt that a few twisted anecdotes could compare.
