I chose "whatever each person chooses" because everyone has different "nature". Everything we do comes from choice. The exception is a momentary reaction based on fear, where we may act without thought. Some people's fear may be so intense that their actions will be more than a momentary reaction.

In a survival situation, an individual can choose to exploit or help others, so there is choice. Some people would rather suffer themselves than harm others. And some people wouldn't think twice about harming others if it gave them an advantage. It's the same case in every day living, where we may be competing for a job or something.

Survival involving something like resources depends on scarcity, like lack of food. But in every day society, food isn't scarce at all. We compete for what buys food (money). But money isn't the value. Food is the value. Money is just a convenient instrument of trade. The problem is there's a monopoly of money, and almost everyone is relying on it instead of just growing their own food.

Anyway my point of all this is trying to figure out the root cause of why some people are the way they are (ie would gladly trample others). There's more than just one reason. One major underlying reason is fear. And it comes from ignorance. And this comes from lack of consciousness. It seems just about every major problem comes from low consciousness, ie unaware of who and what they are.

In most cases its about upbringing and values set as a child.
I was born into a poverty poor childhood with a single parent in the roughest area in my town but my mother was an angel.
I learned nothing bad..only good.
