Progression bets are nothing more than different size bets on different spins. You could get lucky and win big, or unlucky and lose even more.

If you remember, Marvin suggests that you assess the last 5 decisions and bet 1 unit for each win.

So, if your last five results were LWLWW, you would bet 3 units on the next bet.

If you analyze this for a while, you will realize that it's a controlled, positive progression.  Controlled because you're limited to a maximum of 5 unit bets.  Positive because as you win more, you bet more.

Here's a little different take using the same last 5 results.

If you have 5 losses, your next 5 bet series is at 5 units each bet.

If you have 4 losses and 1 win, you subtract the win from the losses and the result is your bet.  In this case 4 - 1 = 3 so our next 5 bet series is at 3 units each bet.

If you have 3 losses and 2 wins, you subtract the wins from the losses and the result is your bet.  In this case 3 - 2 = 1, so your next 5 bet series is at 1 unit each bet.

If you have 2 losses and 3 wins, you subtract the losses from the wins and the result is your bet.  In this case 3 - 2 = 1, so your next 5 bet series is at 1 unit each bet.

If you have 1 loss and 4 wins, you subtract the losses from the wins and the result is your bet.  In this case 4 - 1 = 3, so your next 5 bet series is at 3 units each bet.

If you have 0 losses and 5 wins, you subtract the losses from the wins and the result is your bet.  In this case 5 - 0 = 5, so your next  bet series is at 5 units each bet.

This is a controlled split progression.  Controlled because 5 units per bet is the maximum bet size you can bet.  Split, because you increase your bet size when you lose more than you win and you increase your bet size when you win more than you lose.

Decision #1:  You can either reset back to 1 unit per bet whenever you reach a new profit, or you can always finish the 5 bet series and any time you end a 5 bet series with a new profit, you can reset then.

Decision #2:  You can restrict your bet sizes to a maximum size of 3 units per bet in the following way.  You will notice that you can only have 3 results.  3 - 2 = 1; 4 - 1 = 3; and 5 - 0 = 5.

Whenever you have a result of 1, you bet 1 unit.

Whenever you have a result of 3, you bet 2 units.

Whenever you have a result of 5, you bet 3 units.

Decision #3:  You can restrict your bet sizes even more by betting 1 unit whenever the result is 1 and bet 2 units when the result is either 3 or 5.

Decision #4:  You can restrict your bet sizes even more by betting 1 unit whenever the result is either 1 or 3 and only bet 2 units when the result is 5.

Of course as you move from decision #2 to decision #4 you are getting closer and closer to a 1 unit flat bet.

Decision #5:  You can add an additional level to your bet progression by increasing bet sizes from 1 and 2  to 2 and 4 after you have 2 or 3 losing sets of 5 bets at the 1 and 2 unit level.  This gives you the ability to recover from a losing streak more quickly.  It also involves greater risk and requires a larger buy-in.

This is not for everyone, but may be for someone.

P.S.  I use this to play my $1 minimum/$4 maximum bet blackjack machine.  It's based on 6 decks which are shuffled after every round, so counting cards is of no value.  With perfect basic strategy, I get what is basically a 50/50 bet.  The 1 & 2 then 2 & 4 works perfect for me.
In my case it doesn't matter.  I'm both!

I usually do this kind of progression/money management on sic bo , betting on individual dice.

Yes, there are other even chance bets that are as good or better than roulette.
