Dear all,

I got the email this morning from Dublinbet after I wrote them concerning the problems they have now for days.

Hello John,

We do apologise, our hosting and network providers are dealing with a substantial network Distributed Denial-Of-Service("DDOS") attack on networked resources.

This is unfortunately intermittently affecting connectivity to our systems.

When a connection is available, the live games still work, but the live video is not currently available. (the DDOS is attacking the video servers).

If your connection is affected you may experience frequent disconnections. May we suggest you wait until tomorrow to play, when the connections should be more stable.

We apologise for the interrupted service, and thank you in advance for your patience until this is resolved.

Kind regards,

Helen

Guys

BV goes down for me more than it runs!!  Sometimes I can't stay on five minutes.

As to Dublin--if I understand this right--they are under attack by cyber-blackmailers.  They were told to pay or their signal would be compromised.  I read that somewhere.

And so it goes in the world of the internet.

they are up again.

By the way. A friend of mine visited this "Dublinbet" casino in Dublin and spoke to those dealers. And they showed him cameras etc. He is convinced they are honest. I think they are. At least Steve thinks so too...

They should be resilient. DDoS attacks are a b*, but there are providers who can assist.

In no case should they "bend" to the blackmailers demands. That's akin to opening themselves to repeated blackmailing.

I do hope they "patch" internet protocols to give this sort of DDoS against institutions a stop. It isn't as hard as one could think.

A proposed solution would be a simple "handshake" where there is only a simple "head" request with a personalized key added, without actually downloading contents.

This would need valid users to be given a "key" to enter into the browser prior to connecting to the site. It can be in their welcome email.

Regular POST/GET traffic is not granted to an IP unless a valid key is provided.

Any request for contents without this key is discarded automatically. Being only HEAD requests, no contents are downloaded on the first contact, saving the bulk of the bandwidth and relieving lots of server tension. For what the attackers is concerned, they are talking to an unresponsive server as all their requests are dropped/not answered since they don't have any authentication key.

If they get to steal "keys" from some valid users, the company can pin-point and invalidate them "on the fly". Simply by detecting if many IPs are trying to use the same validation key at once (DDoS only purpose is to overwhelm servers, as all new requests are the same, they can't determine which one belongs to actual users and which to attackers, if they enable the key mechanism they could differentiate them easily by implementing this, never delivering contents to the attackers yet serving the users as usual).

I think genuine users wouldn't mind putting such a key to enjoy uninterrupted service.

Yes, I'll take a key....

Vic

Surely they know this.  If not, why not enlighten them?  You'd do the world a service.

i am sure they will solve the problem soon enough...

There are already services focused to defending against such attacks.

The standard ways being to put up more resources and traffic analyzers to attempt to recognize and block heinous traffic spikes. This is costly, but works.

It would definitely be cheaper and more efficient to let valid users "Tag" themselves instead of taking the lot of requests and putting resources to identify them.

As Sam exemplifies, most users won't mind.

It is not so hard to filter a frequent attacking source, but if they have done a trojan which use the players computers and 10000 of them the problem is harder.  They can plant the trojan from a site which given gambling ideas free, or even gambling fora.

DDoS'ers usually hire botnets (or harvest themselves)

It can cost around $200/day to "blackmail" large portals seriously.

It is clear the "big guys" would bring hell to themselves by paying.

This one quotes $400/week "El Cheapo" service:
