For a short while we have no dark at all in 24 hours.   The time is now 22.00 and the sun is still visible, it will go down here but it will not be dark a second during the night.

In Sydney, Southern Hemisphere, it is now Winter time. In 3 days is the Winter Solistice = shortest number of daylight hours = approx. 14 hours of dark & 10 hours of light. Your summer solistice = max. no of daylight hours will peak this Saturday.

So for us after this weekend summer starts to come & for you winter then starts to come. Is it because you are close to the Artic circle that 24 hr full daylight is seen ?

Full winter then must be nearly be total dark ?

Enjoy the warm while you can.

Ralph

Yes  The artic circle  is located inside my country. I live a bit south of it, but even if the sun is not visible, the red light  shows the whole night.
In opposite the sun do not shows in 24 hours at cristmas time.

East and west of us all around the globe has  very harsh klima in winter, but due to the varm gulf we have  milder.

Sweden and Norway, have  the northernmost cities in the world, the northernmost agriculture where other places at the same latitude have permafrost (may change).

I can see you Ralph!!!!

If I look to the north this time of year, I see a band of light blue on the horizon.....never goes dark

Also....did you know....when you see a sunset....and the sun is just touching the horizon....its an illusion. casued by the atmosphere bending the light. The sun went down 10 minutes earlier

Yes it was that I tried to say, but still it is not dark, we see the sun eigth minutes older than it is, according to light speed and distance to the sun and as you say the  atmosphere, which bend the red more so I see red light.

In 1995 my wife and I spent a summer in Moscow as cultural exchange students for our church and a mission organization.  We're from Arizona as you all know, so we get plenty of darkness all night long here.

How shocked we were when we got to our rooms in a dorm that was part of a boys institute during the USSR days and at 11PM it was still daylight outside.  All we had were sheer curtains that you could read a newspaper through.

We were screwed up all summer with our sleep schedule.  We never felt like going to bed until we were exhausted and then we couldn't sleep more than about 5 hours.  Hardest summer I ever spent anywhere.

I don't envy you folks that live up North.

One thing you don't have to put up with is the heat.  The thermometer in my truck hit 112 degrees F today.
In my case it doesn't matter.  I'm both!

We can get heat and cold, between 30 Centigrade or about the same -30 as cold, in the northern part we got -55 Centigrade at most.
It has to do with latitude and height.

We expect the first 40 Centigrade summer in ten to twenty years.   Arizona is mostly dry, which I think is a greater problem, here in the taiga area it rains, and not to much, it will fall in GB before the moist come here.

--Sorry George,but you have mixed-up something here.....no daylight at 11 pm.in Moscow
at the summer.....

Teo - Just searched google - Moscow next few days = summer solstice = max.no. of daylight hours.  Sunset 22 : 18 -  only 42 minutes short of 11pm.

Since 2011 they have been on GMT +4hrs where they flicked going back 1 hr for winter. So effectively they are on daylight saving time all year now.

If they had some other daylight saving times in 1995 then this would affect relative sunset times ? If it was 2 hours ahead back then sunset would be max. 11 : 18pm.

Whether it's 10pm or 11pm before dusk is not important, the main point was how it affected their body clocks having not experienced long & late daylight hours in higher global latitudes.

Okay, maybe 11 PM was a bit of an exaggeration.  All I know was that it was very late in the evening and it was still light outside.  I just picked 11 PM for effect.  With the diverse membership on the forum from all over the world, I knew someone would be able to correct the time.

I do remember one thing.  We were on the 8th floor and so were above the mosquitoes.  And please don't tell me there were no mosquitoes in Moscow.  I even suggested a business to our translator, yes we needed a translator.  No need to learn Russian since every one we met in Moscow could speak English better than we could.  Any way I suggested that he start a business manufacturing and installing screens on the windows on the lower floors.  I didn't see even one screen to keep the mosquitoes out in the whole city.

He made some comment about having to pay taxes to both the government and the mafia takes most of the profit out of a small business.  We know what that's like here in the US.  The government is the mafia.

I guess that comment will put me on the IRS hit list.

Maybe I'll have to move to Croatia for health reasons and go swimming every day with Ivo.

In case anyone who works for the US government is a member, I'm just kidding.  LoL
